What your home and gift shop needs

Part gallery, part holiday rush.

A home and gift shop mixes the one-of-a-kind with the dependable: a vase you'll never see again on the shelf next to candles you reorder every month. Then November arrives, and gift cards, shipping and a line at the counter all hit in the same week.

What helps is a setup that counts a single piece as carefully as a case, warns you before the steady sellers run out and puts the same shelves online with shipping and pickup, so the holiday season isn't run from a notebook.

The holiday crunch

Gift card requests, website orders to ship and a line to the door all land in the same few weeks.

How Square helps Physical and digital gift cards sold at the counter and on your website, plus Square Handheld to open a second checkout when the holiday line stretches through the shop.

Square Gift Cards Square Handheld Square Websites

One of one

Handmade and vintage pieces exist once, and selling the same piece in the shop and online means an awkward phone call.

How Square helps Give each piece a stock count of one. The shop and your Square website share one item library, so a sale in either place updates that same count.

Online and in-store inventory in sync Square Websites

Steady sellers run out

The candles, cards and dish towels that pay the rent sell out right when a gift-hunter asks for them.

How Square helps Choose a restock level for each item and Square flags anything under it in an email after close. On a paid plan, build a purchase order from that list and receive the boxes against it.

Busy isn't the same as profitable

Some lines sell all year but barely cover their cost, and markdowns pile up after the holidays.

How Square helps Enter what you paid for each item and Square's cost of goods reports show profit and margin line by line, with sell-through and aging inventory, on a paid plan.

Core capabilities

What Square can do for your home and gift shop

Ship it, deliver it or hand it over

Offer shipping with carrier rates, local delivery by your staff or on-demand couriers and in-store or curbside pickup. Shipping labels can be bought through a direct UPS link or through Shippo, so holiday parcels don't mean a line at the post office.

Restock before the rush

Set a low-stock threshold for the candles, cards and throws you always carry. Anything under it is flagged in your stock list and in an email after close, so the next vendor order starts from a list instead of a walk around the shop.

January returns, sorted

Returned gifts go back into stock, exchanges charge or refund the difference and refunds can go to a card, to cash or onto a Square gift card as store credit for next time.

Remember what they gave last year

Customer profiles keep purchase history and notes, so when a regular asks what they bought their sister last Christmas, you can look it up and suggest something that goes with it.

Margins on small-ticket items

Add what you paid for each item, and Square's cost of goods report shows profit and margin alongside sell-through and aging inventory. Square includes these reports in its paid plans.

Hardware options

Hardware that fits a home and gift shop

You don't need every device. Start with what matches where you take payments — and add more later.

Hardware

Square Register

A countertop point of sale with two touchscreens: one for your team and one that faces the customer.

The counter anchor: customers see each item and the total on their own screen, and a receipt printer and cash drawer connect alongside.

  • Takes tap and chip payments; add the magstripe reader if you still swipe
  • Customer-facing screen for tips, order confirmation and receipts
  • Runs on its own — no tablet needed
Hardware

Square Stand

A countertop stand that turns a compatible iPad into a point of sale, with a card reader built in.

Turns the iPad you already have into a counter checkout that swivels around so the customer can pay.

  • Takes tap and chip payments; swiping needs the separate magstripe reader
  • Swivels toward the customer to tip and pay on the same screen
  • Needs a compatible USB-C iPad
Hardware

Square Handheld

A pocket-sized point of sale with a built-in barcode scanner and camera.

A second checkout for the December line and a built-in scanner for counting shelves in January.

  • Takes tap and chip payments anywhere on your floor
  • Built-in scanner for ringing up and counting items
  • Prints to a network receipt or kitchen printer over Wi-Fi
Hardware

Square Terminal

A compact, battery-powered card machine with a built-in receipt printer.

Battery-powered with a receipt printer built in, for holiday markets, maker fairs and sidewalk sales.

  • Takes tap, chip and swipe payments
  • The only Square device with a receipt printer built in
  • All-day battery, so it can move to the table, the curb or the job

How it works

A December afternoon in the shop

One realistic day at a home and gift shop, with the setup above doing the work.

  1. Overnight orders Three website orders came in overnight: two to ship and one for pickup. You buy the shipping labels and set the pickup bag behind the counter.
  2. The one-of-a-kind sells A shopper buys the only hand-painted platter. Its count drops to zero, on the shelf and on your website.
  3. A gift card to go The next customer buys a candle set for a neighbor and a physical gift card for her sister, both in the same sale.
  4. A second line opens When the line reaches the card rack, a team member starts checking out shoppers on Square Handheld.
  5. After close The low-stock email lists three candle scents. You turn it into a purchase order for your vendor before you lock up.

FAQs

Home & Gift: common questions

What hardware does a home and gift shop need?

Square Register or Square Stand at the counter, with a receipt printer and cash drawer, is a solid start. Add a barcode scanner if your stock arrives barcoded, Square Handheld for a second line during the holidays and Square Terminal or Square Reader for markets and pop-ups.

Can I sell gift cards in the shop and online?

Yes. Square Gift Cards come as physical cards you sell at the register and eGift cards customers buy online. They're redeemable at any of your locations and on your website, and Square says they don't expire. Gift cards can't be taken in offline mode, so keep the shop's Wi-Fi reliable through December.

How do I track one-of-a-kind items?

Create each piece as its own item with a stock count of one and a photo for your website. Because the shop and the website share an item library, a sale in either place updates the count. When a big batch of new finds comes in, a spreadsheet import saves entering them one by one.

Can customers order online and pick up in the shop?

Yes. A Square website can offer in-store or curbside pickup, local delivery and shipping. You set delivery areas by ZIP code or radius, and deliveries can go out with your own staff or on-demand couriers, which helps when someone wants a gift on a doorstep by Friday.

Do I need a paid Square plan for a gift shop?

Not to get started. Square Free has no monthly subscription; you pay processing fees, and Square sets its own pricing. The tools that make the holidays easier, including purchase orders, cost and margin reports, loyalty and email or text marketing, need Square Plus or Premium. Plan details live on Square's pricing page, and we can help you decide whether to upgrade before the holidays.

How do I get started with Square for my shop?

Tell us what you stock and whether you ship, and we'll map out a setup. Square makes the approval decision after it reviews your application and verifies your identity and business. Once you're approved, Payaroo helps you load your items, set up gift cards and get the website ready before the holidays.
