Garden center worker helping a customer choose a plant in a greenhouse

What your garden center needs

A year measured in seasons.

A garden center's year swings from spring flats and hanging baskets to fall mums, bulbs and holiday trees. The same hydrangea comes in three pot sizes, customers want advice in the far greenhouse and Saturday mornings bring a line at every register.

Square doesn't have a seasonal-inventory feature as such, so the setup does the work: categories for each season, pot sizes as item variations, online preorders with pickup dates, workshops booked through Square Appointments and Square Handheld to check people out where they're standing.

Stock that turns over each season

Spring annuals, summer perennials and fall bulbs each need their own counts and reorders. Meanwhile, last season's leftovers linger on the benches.

How Square helps Group items into seasonal categories, import each season's list from a spreadsheet and watch category sales and low-stock alerts as the weeks go by.

One plant, three pot sizes

A hosta in a 4-inch, 1-gallon and 3-gallon pot means three prices and three counts. New staff end up guessing at the register.

How Square helps Set each pot size up as a variation of one item with its own price, SKU and stock count. On a paid plan, print barcode labels to stick on the pots.

Shoppers are out in the greenhouse

Customers load a cart three greenhouses from the register, then wait in line to pay for it.

How Square helps Square Handheld has a built-in scanner and takes tap and chip payments, so staff can ring up a cart right at the bench. It needs a Wi-Fi signal out there.

Preorders and workshop seats

People want to claim tomato starts before they sell out, and workshop sign-ups live on a clipboard by the register.

How Square helps Online preorders with a pickup date range and cut-off, plus Square Appointments classes with a set number of spots customers reserve online. Square puts both on its paid plans.

Core capabilities

What Square can do for your garden center

Every pot size, one item

Add a hydrangea once and give it variations for 1-gallon, 3-gallon and 5-gallon pots, each with its own price, cost, SKU and stock count. Staff pick the size at checkout or scan the label and the right price comes up.

Preorders with pickup windows

List items on your Square website as preorders for pickup or local delivery during future dates and hours you set, with a cut-off for orders. That's how you sell tomato starts in March for pickup in May. Preorders need a paid Square plan.

Workshops with a head count

Run workshops and classes through Square Appointments: set the number of spots, assign an instructor and let customers reserve online, one-time or recurring. Classes need a paid plan, and changing a class's date or time cancels and refunds existing bookings.

Seasons as categories

Group items into categories such as spring annuals, perennials, fall bulbs and holiday decor. Sales by category then show how each season sold, which is what you'll want in hand when you plan next year's orders.

Local delivery for the heavy stuff

Your Square website can offer in-store or curbside pickup and local delivery by your own staff or on-demand couriers, in zones you set by ZIP code or radius. Trees and pallets of soil are a job for your own crew.

Margins on living stock

Record what you paid your growers and cost of goods reports show profit and margin by item, while aging inventory points to the plants that have sat on the bench too long. Cost reports are part of Square's paid plans.

Hardware options

Hardware that fits a garden center

You don't need every device. Start with what matches where you take payments — and add more later.

Hardware

Square Handheld

A pocket-sized point of sale with a built-in barcode scanner and camera.

Built-in scanner and tap-and-chip checkout for the greenhouse floor. Check that your Wi-Fi reaches the far benches.

  • Takes tap and chip payments anywhere on your floor
  • Built-in scanner for ringing up and counting items
  • Prints to a network receipt or kitchen printer over Wi-Fi
Hardware

Square Register

A countertop point of sale with two touchscreens: one for your team and one that faces the customer.

At the main checkout, staff ring up flats and bags of soil while customers watch the total on the second screen.

  • Takes tap and chip payments; add the magstripe reader if you still swipe
  • Customer-facing screen for tips, order confirmation and receipts
  • Runs on its own — no tablet needed
Hardware

Square Terminal

A compact, battery-powered card machine with a built-in receipt printer.

Runs on its own battery and prints receipts, so it can work a parking-lot tent or a weekend plant sale.

  • Takes tap, chip and swipe payments
  • The only Square device with a receipt printer built in
  • All-day battery, so it can move to the table, the curb or the job
Hardware

Pairs with your phone or tablet for farmers markets and off-site plant sales.

  • Takes tap and chip cards plus phone wallets

How it works

A Saturday in May

One realistic day at a garden center, with the setup above doing the work.

  1. Preorder pickups Customers who preordered tomato starts in March arrive during the pickup window you set, and staff hand over the flats.
  2. Help at the bench A customer asks about shade plants. A team member suggests a hosta and rings up the 3-gallon size on Square Handheld right there.
  3. The main register Another cart with potting soil, a hanging basket and a gift card goes through the main register. The customer joins loyalty with a phone number.
  4. Workshop at ten Twelve people who reserved spots online gather for the container-planting workshop in the back greenhouse.
  5. Afternoon delivery A website order for local delivery, a Japanese maple and ten bags of mulch, goes out on your truck with two of your crew.
  6. After close Category sales show how spring annuals did today, and the low-stock email lists what to reorder from your growers.

FAQs

Garden: common questions

What hardware works for a garden center?

A common setup pairs Square Register at the main checkout with Square Handheld for the greenhouse and yard, since Handheld has a scanner built in. Square Stand is an option if you'd rather use an iPad, Square Terminal handles a parking-lot tent with its built-in printer and Square Reader or Tap to Pay on a phone covers off-site plant sales.

Does Square have seasonal inventory tools?

Not as a separate feature, and Square's garden page doesn't describe one. Garden centers handle seasons with everyday tools: categories for each season's stock, spreadsheet imports when new stock arrives, low-stock alerts and online preorders that set the dates and hours an item is available for pickup, which need a paid plan. Category sales reports then show how each season did.

Can I sell plants in different pot sizes?

Yes. Create the plant once and add each pot size as a variation with its own price, cost, SKU and stock count. Staff pick the size at checkout or scan a barcode label, and on a paid plan you can print those labels from the Dashboard, Square Register or the Square POS app on an iPhone or iPad.

Can customers book workshops and classes?

Yes, through Square Appointments on a paid plan. You set the number of spots, assign an instructor and run one-time or recurring classes that customers reserve online. Classes can't use the waitlist or booking through Google, Instagram or Facebook. Changing a class's date or time cancels and refunds everyone already booked.

Will Square Handheld work out in the greenhouse?

Handheld needs Wi-Fi, so check that your signal reaches every greenhouse and the yard. If the connection drops, Square hardware can keep taking card payments offline and process them once it reconnects. Square recommends reconnecting within 24 hours, and you're responsible for offline payments that are later declined, expired or disputed. Tap to Pay, gift cards and Afterpay don't work offline.

What will Square cost my garden center?

Square sets its own prices, and what a garden center pays mostly depends on whether the busy season calls for paid features. Square Free skips the monthly subscription but still carries processing fees. Online preorders, class booking, label printing, purchase orders, cost reports and loyalty need Square Plus or Premium. Look up current plans on Square's pricing page, then let us help you work out whether spring alone justifies the upgrade.

How do we get our garden center onto Square before spring?

Start before the rush, not during it. Square checks each applicant's identity and business before approving an account, and a request for a photo ID can add a business day or two. Meanwhile, tell Payaroo about your greenhouses, pot sizes and workshops. We'll help you import items, set up variations and get Handheld working on the floor.
